Kicking things off with Dan Carlin

  1. Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History – Dan is one of the best-known podcasters out there and is World War I series is like the Old Testament of podcasting.  He is very much into the long-form method of podcasting (average run-time is probably like 4+ hours per show).  And as a result, he only puts out a few Hardcore History episodes a year.  I think the thing I like the most about Dan is that he thinks about things in a cause/effect mentality, refusing to see any one event in a vacuum.  His focus in these podcasts is on the extremes of the human experience, so he takes you back to a ton of original source material like journals, memoirs, and autobiographies.
  2. Common Sense with Dan Carlin – Out of the history books and into real life, Common Sense is Dan’s take on current events.  Dan was a proponent of getting an outsider in the White House, but felt like he stepped on a grenade with Trump.  As such, he seems to be focused on other things at the moment.  I will say though, his thoughts on social media in the episode Episode Title pushed me over the edge to start this myself.
  3. Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History: Addendum – Since he doesn’t want to compromise the quality on his long-form material, Dan started a new show for topics that are smaller in scope than what is found on  Hardcore History.  These are only about an hour in run-time, and are still high-quality Carlin.
